Satellite IoT, Machine Learning and AI

The ability to track on land air and sea is entering a new era. EchoStar is launching a global S-Band LEO constellation to add to it US S-Band capabilities. Operation is planned to begin in 2024. The satellites will deliver global IoT, machine-to-machine (M2M) and data services. The satellites are said to have software-defined radio systems with onboard storage and processing to power two-way device connectivity. The constellation is to support the LoRa protocol for low power, long-range applications.

There are multiple such 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) constellations being developed. OQ Technology is secured funding from the venture capital arm of the Saudi oil and gas company Aramco. Other are the likes of Astrocast, Wyld and hiSky.

With the vast amounts data IoT that will be produced, machine learning will deliver insights into otherwise hidden information in data for rapid, automated responses and improved decision making. Machine learning for IoT can be used to project future trends, detect anomalies, and augment intelligence by ingesting image, video and audio. Machine learning is essential to demystify the hidden patterns in IoT data by analyzing using sophisticated algorithms. Machine learning inference will supplement or replace manual processes with automated systems using statistically derived actions in critical processes. AI sensors can create mountains of data, much of which has immediate value in process control and value in the sense of business analysis and optimization. AI can be used in both these missions, and proper AI usage can increase efficiency and accuracy. But not all AI is the same, and not all types are applicable to a given control or analysis mission.

ML is used to funnel and create data logic. AI now steps in for process control, business analysis and optimization. AI further increases efficiency and accuracy by intelligently combining fused sensors, historical events, activities and current events as well as related intelligence. While focusing on a specific task, AI provides alerts to the operator of probabilities that relate to events and patterns. AI is the tool that considers, combines and correlates billions of information blocks in real time. The scale and magnitude of such tasks is beyond the human brain.
